Mobile Robotics: Exploring the Future of Harmony and Community Performance
At the Tetbury Community Choir, we are all about the human connection—the shared breath, the local rehearsals at Christ Church, and the joy of voices blending together. However, as we look toward the future of the arts in our community, it is fascinating to see how the world of Mobile Robotics is beginning to intersect with the world of music and performance.
Bringing Music to New Spaces One of the most exciting developments in Mobile Robotics is the ability for autonomous systems to transport equipment, lighting, and even sound systems to remote or unusual locations. Imagine a future "Autumn Cheer" concert where small, silent mobile robots help set up our risers or move delicate instruments across the Goods Shed with perfect precision. These tools aren't here to replace the singers, but to handle the heavy lifting, allowing us to focus entirely on the music.
Robotics as a Tool for Accessibility We pride ourselves on being an "open door" choir. Interestingly, research in Mobile Robotics is focused on creating assistive devices that can help people with limited mobility attend community events more easily. From robotic chairs that navigate local venues to telepresence robots that could allow a housebound member to "stand" in the choir loft and sing with us via a screen, the potential for inclusivity is limitless.
The "Robotic" Voice vs. The Human Soul While Mobile Robotics can now produce incredibly complex sounds, it only serves to highlight how special our human rehearsals are. A robot might be able to move perfectly or hit a pitch with mathematical precision, but it can’t replicate the "smile on the face" that David Kyle and our team aim for at every performance.
Technology will continue to evolve, but the heart of Tetbury will always be its people. Whether we are assisted by the latest in Mobile Robotics or just our own two feet, we look forward to many more years of singing together!
